What are implants?

Implants are one way of replacing missing teeth. A post is planted in your jaw bone to support a replacement tooth. The planted post acts like the root of a natural tooth. Implants can also be used to support fixed bridges or dentures. A local anaesthetic will be used for this procedure and you can also discuss additional sedation with your surgeon if you feel you need it.

Implant treatment has two different stages. The first, when the implant is placed in the jaw, will typically take place about 6 – 8 weeks after an extraction has been carried out. This time lapse allows the tooth socket to be seen to be completely clear of infection or inflammation.

The second stage is approximately 8 weeks later when the gum is opened and an abutment is fixed to the post. Once the abutment is placed, the gum tissue is then closed around, but not over, the abutment. After the abutment is placed, the gums must heal for one or two weeks before impressions are made of the mouth and remaining teeth. These impressions are used to make a realistic-looking artificial tooth.
