With the Bournemouth set-piece scrums and line-outs struggling throughout they had very little ball with which to work but nonetheless a lively start saw them take the lead 6-0 after a quarter of an hour courtesy of two penalties from scrum-half Mike Pope. The Coney Hill fly-half Rory soon replied with a penalty of his own as Coney Hill began to show what a lively dangerous side they were. Scrum-half Leon Liggett was a constant threat either through intelligent kicking or working in tandem with No-8 Layton Correira of the back of the dominant scrum. However, despite the pressure they exerted, it wasn’t until the thirty-sixth minutes that the line was crossed. With Bournemouth under siege on their own line the ball was crucially knocked on as they tried to clear and the visitors were forced to yield a 5-metre scrum. Liggett put the ball right and full-back Martin Knight was there in the line to score the opening try. Baker added the two points for the home side to lead 10-6–just reward for their dominance. Bournemouth were from out of it and they attacked through left-wing James Payne forcing Coney Hill to infringe in attempting to stop his run. Pope pulled the opportunity to the left of the near post. George Leyland did well from the 22-metre drop-out but Bournemouth lost the ball and Coney Hill were able to put in a long clearance kick to end the half.
Martin Knight was soon in action after the restart when he fielded a Bournemouth clearance kick and he weaved his way through to score near the posts just three minutes into the half. Baker again added the two points and Coney Hill were beginning to stretch away at 17-6. This set the tone for the half with Coney Hill dominating territorially and Bournemouth defending desperately. Injuries to inside –centre Martyn Lever and hooker Andy Spikings did not help. It was inevitable that penalties would be given away and after Baker spurned the first opportunity he was successful with a second right in front of the posts to make the score 20-6 after fifty-nine minutes. Bournemouth were unable to break the stranglehold but it was their poor line-out play that led to Coney Hill’s final score. The ball was not straight deep in their own half and from the resulting scrum Coney Hill drove for the line. They were stopped at first but there was the dangerous Liggett sniping around the fringes to put Codlin through for his try. However Coney Hill knocked on at the restart and Bournemouth managed a half-decent scrum allowing them to put the ball wide to the right for Gray to make ground and put Edwards clear for the winger to outstrip the defence and dive over for a consolation try with a couple of minutes to go. That gave time for another Coney Hill foray but Bournemouth managed to keep them out.
